New Location, also Comics

Me and Adam are presently renting a nice little apartment 3 blocks south of his work or 98th Ave and 104th St. We've got a 3 month lease on it, and will be getting phone and internet on Wednesday.^_^

It's nice to be one 20 minute busride from school, cause I have SOOOO much work to do. IF I can manage to get off my lazy butt, this week, I will be going insane from working.

Also, Saturday was 12 Hour Comic Day. It was basically a 12 Hour Comic Jam and was a lot fun. I even got my picture and a quote in the Edmonton Journal. Yay!

Can't wait for May.

Endless Ocean

Adam messaged me the other day with "Do you like the ocean?"

I said yeah, and asked what's up. "Just curious," he replied.

Next day: "I bought a game about the ocean."

What's it called?

Endless Ocean. It was $30.

It's actually a pretty fun game, and quite relaxing. We spent a good chunk of the weekend diving in various places, taking pictures and petting fish, penguins and polar bears. You can even get dolphin friends to swim with you. I named mine Namor and Zeus (though I should have named him Poisidon or Neptune).

As you interact with fish (poking, petting, feeding), you get more information about them. Some of them will give their info with a couple pets, and then follow you around for the rest of your dive, wanting more affection. Other fish won't give up their secrets so easily, especially in the deep sea crevace called "The Abyss." One fish down there that we can't get any info out of, we simply call "Dick Fish." Cause he's a dick.

There are also missions you can do, but you don't have to do them if you don't really want to... you've got about a week to complete some missions, so it's a pretty chill game.

If you like fish, this game's for you.

Ice on Whyte

So this week, I'm singing at Ice on Whyte, and yesterday was my first night singing. I got the adress, checked which buses tooks me there and went on my way. I took a 7 down to City Centre and took the LRT from there to the University. I knew I needed to take a 4 or a 6 to get me to 104th street. I ho on a 6.

It's dark, and the bus is really crowded, so i can't see any street signs. All I could tell was that the bus was going very south. South was bad. I got off the bus. I had no clue where I was, so I started walking till I could find a street sign. It was a little after 7, so I called Jack to tell him I'll be late, if I make it there at all. Afew minutes later, I realize I'm on 113th street and 67th ave. NOT where I wanted to be, so I turned around and started hiking back toward 82nd ave.

Fortunately, a 6 comes by, and I'm able to take it back to the university. I didn't want to take my chances with it going the wrong direction again, so from the university, I WALKED to 85th ave and 104th street. I also just missed 2 buses that would have taken me most of the way.

I finally got there around 8 o'clock. It had taken me 2 full hours to get there from my house. Needless to say, I wasn't looking forward to the adventure of finding my way back home. Fortunately, a very nice lady drove me home.

Let's hope things will go easier on Wednesday and Thursday.

Adam's Project is Finished!

So yesterday was the day of Adam's project presentation. I think it went pretty well except for Sean's part (that was pretty brutal). We headed over to Boston pizza afterwards then went to The Globe @ 7 for the CST grad party. I made Adam stay in his penguin suit the whole time cause he looked nice in it. ^_^

We ended up being 15 minutes late to The Globe due to sucky Edmonton bussing, but oddly enough, no one else was there except for Kyle. He was the only other person there that I had met before, cause Sam and Sean didn't come at all. People starting showing up later and there was a lot of constantly moving around to different tables.

I had some potato skins there. They were GREAT! I need to have potato skins more often.

We ended up leaving early cause I guess it wasn't so great of a party as Adam hoped it would be. He also said he had "things to do"??!? O_o

We watched some IT Crowd and cuddled a lot. It was a good night. ^_^

Hopefully, he might already have a job... so horray!

Also, we got Matthew and Serena to play some more Guitar Hero. They're starting to get the hang of it now! Soon they'll be better than me. :(

I had to get a needle yesterday. It huuuuurt!

I guess mumps has been going around, so everyone was encouraged to get immunized. There were notes in our boxes and posters everywhere. I really didn't want to go, as I had nightmares about it the night before. I'm terrified of needles, and of course, being all tense only makes it hurt more. I ended up being dragged down with Ceima and Amanda, so at least I wasn't alone. The worst part was being told to wiggle my fingers as the needle was jabbed into me. My arm was sore for s few hours after that, but I'm fine now.

At least I won't have to worry about getting measles, mumps or rubella anytime soon.

Got a Boyfriend

Well, me and Adam (from the drama club) have become involved with each other for the past week and a half or so, when he came to have a Firefly marathon with me.

We've been spending a hell of a lot of time together recently.... but I don't mind.:)

NAIT's on Fire!

Well, not anymore...

In the first half of my English class, we heard the alarm and thought it was just another silly fire drill. We head outside and complain about standing in the cold for forever when there's not even a real fire.

Then we hear the firetrucks coming.

A little while later, we're allowed to head inside to the nearest hallway, but we're not allowed to leave that hallway to enter the E-wing. Probably cause the E-wing smelled like burning. After some standing around, we (me, Steven, Nicki, Alex, Sheldon and Reba) headed over to the HP centre, where I took some pictures on the pedway.

After that, we headed to the South Lobby to see if we could back to our lockers. No such luck, but there were people playing Guitar Hero. Pretty soon, Ceima and Jesse and Alex find us and tell us we need to go to the gym. George is at the gym and he tells us afternoon classes (except the field trip) are cancelled. i didn't HAVE afternoon classes, so it didn't really affect me.:/

Someone opened the door to tell us that it would be another half hour to an hour before we could go back to the E-wing. Me and Steven head off to get some food in the Common Market and run into Rosalee, Daina and Dolly. They were able to sneak back downstairs to grab their stuff, but by the time we went to where they went, it was blocked off by another teacher.:/ We strolled around the sports area for a while until we were finally let back in E-wing. I grabbed my coat and keys and headed home.

I was supposed to get out of school at 10:10 this morning. I didn't end up getting home till 2:00.:( Oh well...

Apparently, the fire was caused by a small torch in the denturist section on the second floor. Not a lot of flames, but tons of smoke and water damage, leading to about $100,000 in damage. I was actually sitting next to some of the dental students on the bus, and one was saying, "I wonder if we can just have smoke-flavoured dentures?"

So, I finally picked up a PS2 today. I got the white one that's bundled with Singstar. I'm pretty eager to see how Singstar compares with Karaoke Revolution. I'll also be able to play Guitar Hero II as soon as I get it back from Dean.^_^

I was able to play some Guitar Hero III at Adam's place the other day. It's fun, but definately harder. I may have to pick up the first Guitar Hero too, just cause it's easier.:p

I also played with the iPod Touch at Futureshop for a little bit. Wow... I really really want to get one.

Across the Universe

I got to see this movie a week ago at Silver City (or Scotiabank Theatre, as it is now called.@_@). If you like The Beatles, then it is a must-see movie. It's awesome, and the best musical I've seen in a long time! My favourite songs are probably I Want You, Hey Jude and Strawberry Fields Forever. Just amazing all the way through. The movie basically writes itself.

I stayed in and watched Evil Dead II last night. We got about 30 Halloweeners.

I saw very few people at school dressed up, and since I was a pirate, people kept yelling, "Arr!" "Harr!" and "Yarr!" at me.

Here's some pictures of my costume, decorations and the vampire stakes and silver bullets I made.

Also, the drama club finally has a couple people willing to help out with filming and editing, as well as another female actress. They seems like pretty cool people.:)

I've been quite busy doing my Halloween decorations and preparing for my English presentation on monster slaying. The presentation went really well, and everyone seemed to enjoy it.^_^

I carved my Jack-o-Lantern last night while watching some Big Wolf. (Veoh will let me watch them on the site now! Yay!)

24 Hour Comics Day was this weekend. It was a blast, but I am soooo tired. I was sitting by Rob all day, so I was able to borrow some of his art supplies and he drew me some awesome gun and werewolf references.

I finished my comic in good time, but I think my content was a bit of a disaster. I ran out of story ideas and ended up drawing dancing art supplies and a giant, crying Sharpie. Then I drew a monkey punching a cobra. my creative pools had gone dry by that point.

Regardless of my sleepiness, I had a great time and really wanna do it again, next year.:)

The City Drive

Remember that old show Big Wolf on Campus? The one with the jock who turns into a werewolf and has to team up with the gothy Merton J. Dingle? I looooved Merton. I'm a dork, I know, but I loved that character and he was so cute.

Fast forward to the present day. I check Wikipedia on the show to find out more about it. (Gotta love Wiki). The actor who played Merton is a guy named Danny Smith, who is not only an actor, but a singer/musician. He's in a band called The City Drive. They've got a few songs on the band site that automatically play and I was quite happily surprised with the quality.

Malifluous.

There's one song in particular, "Runner" that's sooo good. I really wanna sing it myself if I can get a good backtrack to it. I was gonna pick up the bands' album at HMV yesterday, but they DIDN'T HAVE IT! X_X I guess I'll have to check out the big HMV in WEM, or get them to order it for me.:/

They also made a couple podcasts which I found through their MySpace page. So funny and awesome. I nearly choked on my popcorn. (Yes, I was actually eating popcorn at the time.)

Anyhoo, this is my new favourite band right now. You better check them out. Or else. Or else I'll beat you over the head with a guitar. I do own a guitar, y'know, even though I don't know how to play it.

Ok, maybe I won't beat you over the head with a guitar, but I WILL constantly show you pictures of Danny and shout "ISN'T HE PRETTY?!" like a teenage schoolgirl.

Golden Rice Bowl

So on Sunday, we were going to go to Dynasty for my birthday, but since they were closed for an hour and completely booked for the evening, we headed to Golden Rice Bowl instead. They were planning for a wedding reception at 6:00 but let us in anyway. The woman at the restaurant even ordered for us. It was soooo good. I only wish there were more veggies and scallops so that I could've had some.

At the end of the meal, the waiters came over with a candle in a mango pudding and sang me happy birthday.:)

Oh, I also got about $290 in birthday moneys, a couple arm warmers, a sweater, a vegetable ivory necklace from Ecuador and a few comic related products. Pretty good score for my 20th.B)

Drama Club

After filling out a survey about potential clubs, I got an email about the Drama Club having their first meeting on Wednesday at 5:00. Since I didn't know if any other clubs in my interest range would start up, I decided to check out the meeting.

A whole 4 people(including me) showed up. One other girl and two guys.

Surprisingly small, but I actually hope it doesn't get much bigger, since I'm more comfortable in smaller groups. It would also enable us to do some group writing for some awesome comedy sketches.:)

Guess I'll also be making posters for the club, since I'm the only one with Photoshop skills. Horray!

There has been some added tension to the relationship between myself and Adobe. I spend nearly $400 to buy a product of theirs and they choose to not validate my serial number when I try to use it.

I'm gonna try a reinstall, and if that doesn't work, my last resort is to call the help desk and talk to some guys in India for who knows how long on my cell phone.:(

iMac set up.

Woo hoo! Got my iMac all set up! I couldn't get the iPod deal at the tech store, but I was able to get a free scanner/printer/copier deal instead, so that's cool too. I plan on buying an iPod Touch in the near future anyways.

Fortunately, the cool Tobey Maguireish guy at the tech store carried my iMac and printer outside of the school for me.:) The day before, he had noticed my headphones and said they looked more like $3000 headphones than $50 ones. He may have been flirting with me, but I'm not sure. Anyway, he seems cool, so I'd like to talk to him again sometime, maybe find out his name.

Now, all I need is the Adobe suite, and I'm all set!^_^

Settling in.

Haven't posted in a while, but I've been fairly busy with school and stuff.

NAIT is really cool. I've started getting used to the bussing and school schedule and the layout of the place. The comic shop and my singing studio are only about a 15 to 20 minute walk away.:) The sucky thing is that I still don't have heat or hot water. Thank god the girl's locker room is in the same hallway as my classroom. Hot showers are a luxury.

Hopefully, today is the day that I get a brand spanking new iMac and iPod Nano. We'll see...

Hectic, Busy Busy

I did nearly all of my moving this weekend. I've got everything except my tv and dvd player, my other dresser, some clothes and my long box of comics.

My room is set up and tidy, the kitchen in looking cleaner and smelling nicer than it did before and the bathroom still needs to be cleaned more. The bathtub is spotless, but I doubt I'll be using it soon. Did I mention there's no heat or hot water here?

Yeah... because of the previous tenants not paying the rent, the heat was all shut off, and could be this way until the new tenant comes in at the end of the month. The electricity might go at any time too.:/ Fingers crossed. I'm praying for an Indian summer.

Despite the lack of heat, I had quite a cozy night here. At least, I was when I was actually sleeping and not kept awake out of the fear of someone breaking in and trying to kill me. I kept the hallway light on, just in case.

I might not get any sleep tonight though, cause I'll be too nervous about tomorrow. I just hope I can learn my bus route easily.

Drumheller

A week ago, we took a day trip to Drumheller as our 1 vacationy thing this summer. We went to all the usual places we go. Reptile World, gift shops, the Royal Tyrell Museum and The Fossil Shop.

At the museum, they did a lot of cool redecorating. Before, when you entered the museum, there was a big spinning globe with a spotlight as the sun and a narration talking about the earth in space. Everyone used to just walk right by it, so they got rid of the whole thing. Now, when you come in, you're put in a Jurassic Park-esque rainforest with several Albertosaurus, complete with painted backgrounds and soundtrack. I tried to take some cool pictures of it. We'll see how they turn out.

I ended up coming home with a salad/pasta fork shaped like a velociraptor arm, a fossilized ammolite in a bit of rock, a fossilized shark tooth and a tiny stuffed utahraptor. I wanted to look for another opal necklace, as I had gotten my current one in Drumheller, but it's very rare to see opals set in jewelry, and the ones that are, are always $600.:/ The white opal in my necklace has cracked, which is common for opals. Maybe I'll have to buy a $50 opal and then take it to a jewlelers to have it made into a pendant.

NAIT Welcome Week

So Monday was the start of NAIT'S Welcome Week.

First off, there was an ice breaking thing in the gym where I got to briefly meet some people. One girl who I became friendly with, Andrea, noticed my henna tattoo and that became the starting point of our conversation. I REALLY need to get myself a henna kit, especially if it helps make new friends.:)

After the ice breaking thing, we were put in groups and were taken on a tour of the main campus. It looks like a really great campus and there are lot's of places to eat and study. There's a coffee shop, a Mr. Sub, a Pizza Hut, a Common Market, and even a campus bar, The Nest, located next to the swimming pool. It'll be free to go to the pool, so I think I might end up going there quite often.

When the tour was finished, we headed over to the Shaw theatre for a comedian presentation about managing finances. I ended up getting 5 bucks for being "the smallest freshman."B)

After that, there was a free hypnotist show at The Nest with Damian the hypnotist. It was pretty fun. I was laughing so hard I was crying.

The next day, I went in early for the free pancake breakfast and registration. As we were having breakfast, some French guy asked us to sit at his table and we talked alot about politics, since he said he was going to be a polititan. Very friendly though. The registration went quickly so we were out of there pretty soon.

Afterwards, we went to Surf's Up! at a cheap theatre. The movie was really great. The only downside was that a daycare brought 196 kids to it and completely filled it up. My dad, who was late(as usual) couldn't get in to see it with us.:/

Anyhoo, it's been a very exciting week so far.:)

R.I.P Mike Weiringo

Comic artist Mike Weiringo died last night of a heart attack.:(

He was one of the greats and will truly be missed as both an artist and a wonderful human being. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Veg Fair

So the Veg fair was this week, and my Uncle John and Auntie Lil had gotten us all 3 day passes and ride bracelets. My mom's cousin's family from BC also came down for the fair. It was nice seeing them again.

I spent most of my time walking around and watching the chariots and chuckwagon races.

Around 10pm on Saturday, I ended up getting a Henna Tattoo of an ankh on my arm. I had to wait 30 minutes to take the paste off and 24 hours to get it wet. I was told it would last between 1 and 2 weeks, which seems like a pretty good deal for 5 bucks. I got one for Matthew too(he picked a scorpion).

Those temporary tattoos that you put on with water are supposed to last about a week, but for me, they barely ever lasted a day. I always ended up touching them or rubbing them, so they'd be half gone in about an hour. The Henna tattoo, however is still intact and didn't get smudged at all. I am quite happy with it.

Comics, Ikea and Jones

I had heard that Happy Harbour was having a sale of 80% off back issues. My brother buys back issues almost entirely, so I figured he'd want to go.

I ended up getting $82.50 worth of comics for 30 bucks. Pretty sweet deal. Some stuff was consignment, so there was no sale on it.

Ikea:

I always thought it would be cool if Ikea let you stay overnight in the store or if they had a hotel. I would totally stay in an Ikea hotel. Now, my dreams are finally coming true... in Oslo, anyway.

In Oslo, Ikea is making the store into a free hostel for those who want to stay overnight to complete their shopping.

Late Night Walks.

Since it's been so hot out, I often go out for walks in the late evening. Tonight, I loaded up my iPod, put on jeans and a sweater(mostquitos are vicous), grabbed a bag of chips and went out walking.

On my way down main street, I cross paths with the neighbour guy, Tyler. I had met him once before on one of my walks, although that was was around 9pm, while this was more like 11:30pm.

He says, "W-what are you doin' out here? Do you have a problem or something?"

Me: No. Just going for a walk, listening to stuff.

Him: You should stay at home.

Me: But it's hot in the house...

And we go our separate ways.

Had I thought of it at the time, I would have said, "Well, I'm an adult, I can go out for walks at night," since I have a slight suspicion now, that he may think I'm more like 14 instead of 19.

As I returned back to the house, I saw him walking along the sidewalk in front of my house. He disappeared into his own house a short time later. I kept walking for a little while and watched some distant lightning. Didn't see him again as I came back.

I'm curious now, if he just thinks it's unsafe in our town for any woman to go walking at night, or if he thinks I'm 14 and doesn't want me to get into trouble.

Eyeglasses... More than Meets the Eye.

I got my glasses today. Then I went to see Transformers.

The glasses make quite a difference for reading black on white, or white on black(except on the computer). It's like someone turned up the sharpness on the television that is my eyes.

I had heard Transformers had really good sound, so I sat in the middle of the speakers and right under the projector. I think I was one of the only girls in the theatre, though the theatre didn't have many people in the first place.

Before the movie, I was listening to a convo between a little kid and his dad. I thought it was interesting.

Kid: Did you like Transformers?

Dad: No, I didn't get into Tranformers.

Kid: What movies were you used to?

Dad: Smurfs.

Kid: What Smurfs?

Dad: They're little blue guys that run around and cause trouble. You ever see one, you step on 'im.

Ah, smurfs......

Anyway, I thought the movie was awesome. Really great animation and even a good story, although maybe that's cause I've never watched a Transformers cartoon in my life. I did, however own a slightly broken Astroplane and say, "Transformers, robots in disguise!" while playing with it.

I think we may be on the verge of seeing craze of giant robot movies. Could a Go-Bots film be next?

I dislike my procrastinative nature. I now have over a weeks' worth of work that I have to do in about 24 hours. JOY!

I've (hopefully) become a more competent artist, and have been accepted to the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology for their Graphic Communications course starting this fall. Yaaaaay!

For Halloween, I dressed up a Death of the Endless.:)

On my evening walk today, I used my iPod Nano and new K55 headphones to listen to CBC's Quirks and Quarks. It was very pleasant.

Back in April, I went to the Calgary Comic Expo and had a ton of fun. I mostly sat at Dave McCaig's table, watching his stuff(although that was also fun), but I was also able to get my Batman: TAS volume 1 DVD signed by Paul Dini and Bruce timm, as well as getting a sweet Catwoman sketch from Timm.^_^ My most expensive piece of art is now finally framed.... a colour Elsa Bloodstone print from page 22 of Nextwave #9 from Dave. It it tres awesome.

Speaking of colour, I also had my hair dyed at the local salon. It's dark red with blonde streaks and brown bangs, with brown underneath the red. Tri-colour!

More recently, I got my first ever eye exam today. Just as I thought, I have astigmatism in both of my eyes and will need glasses. I picked out a cool pair of rectangular frames that I think make me look a bit like Barbara Gordon with my red hair.

My Cat + Black Cords = Fear

For some odd reason, my cat PJ is terrified of black cords. She's extremely skittish around the vaccuum cleaner hose and today, she was scared of a blck iron cord. She cautiously went up to it and sniffed at it, then backed away. She tapped it a bit with her paw and backed even further away.

My mom and I were watching this and as soon as PJ had moved closer to the cord again, she put her foot on the cord and shook it, causing PJ to jump 3 feet into the air backwards! My mom started to roll up the cord so it wouldn't scare PJ anymore and I went over to pick up my cat who was now shaking like a leaf. I got her in my arms, but as soon as she saw the cord again she squirmed and struggled and scratched my arm up good.

I don't think she'll be going down that hallway again any time soon.

I'm thinking she might've had a bad encounter with a garter snake.

Poor Kitty.

I went to see it yesterday afternoon and absolutely loved it. I even started to tear up when the Waynes were shot! Not only is it a great comic book movie, but it's a great movie in general. They finally got Batman right.

I'm finally at my own computer again! Horray!

The ski trip was great, though I didn't do too much skiing. We watched Ginger Snaps 2 and 3(3 was filmed in Fort Edmonton Park like I guessed it was) and The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra(very funny movie!).

Then on Friday we(me, and Dean and Steph again) went to see Ong Bak. It's a very good Taiwanese kung-fu fighting action movie. I didn't even mind the subtitles! Awesome stuff in it. I highly recommend it.

And speaking of Friday, that ended up being my Valentine's Day. I had made Dean a card on the computer(with my incredible skills in GIMP and paint) bought him a sweater(at the second hand store, but he liked it anyways)and gave him an arts n' crafts pipecleaner bee that I found at the Dollar Store. He loves that bee sooo much.

It's kinda become our thing now...bees. He wanted me to wear a bee dress for grad and started pestering me to dress like a bee. It's now become a cute thing for us. I'm his little bee now!:D

Oh, and in other news, I'll be getting a cell phone from my dad(his old one) in a few days and am gonna see if he'll get me a laptop too(which he probably will). Yay technology upgrades for me!:D

My stupid computer won't let me sign in again, so I'll probably have to use my friend's computer to do any more posts on here (like I'm doing now). I've had quite a few problems like this and I can't figure out what's wrong.

Sigh...

Anyways! My name is Vanessa and I live in a small town in Alberta, Canada. Today I'm going on a trip with my friend Steph, my boyfriend Dean and some of their friends to a cabin for a bit of cross country skiing and movie watching and other fun stuff this weekend. I'll probably be able to post here again before I have to go back home.

I'll try to fix my computer problem and post again soon!
